Scammed by someone in my market. Legal action?

I'm looking for some advice.

Last June I received a text from a woman named Karen Groat from Michigan, who I had worked with on a previous event.  I only mention the name because if someone else has had the same problem with her, maybe we can approach her together?  She was desperate and needed someone to cover for her for an event the next morning.  Ironically, I had applied for the event and was told that if someone backed out, I would get the job.  I told her that, and asked her to just call the agency, but she begged me to pretend to be her.  She said that it was her first time working for the company.  I felt bad for her, and even though it did not feel right, I did it for her.

She never paid me.  I called her, left voice mails, e-mailed her…

Every few months I will e-mail her, and she always gives the same response:  Give me your address and I'll send the check.  The thread of e-mails contains my address four or five times by now.

Legal action doesn't seem to be an option, since I signed her name, which is illegal.  I'm hoping to run into her at another event, but I since this is just a summer job for me I have not yet.

What should I do?

So you purposely participated in a scam in which you fraudulently posed as someone else so that the person did not lose their status for canceling an event?  Did you think the agency running the promotion might want to know about this?  What if each person were specifically chosen for this event?  You just went along with the scam without thinking of the consequences?

And now you want to know why this person, who came up with the scam is not paying you?  Maybe and I
am just thinking through things quickly here, but just maybe because this person is an immoral  citizen looking to
cut corners and get paid for work she did not complete?

Here is your advice. Run, don't walk away from this person and this scenario.  Your non-payment should be a lesson learned
and quite honestly a fair punishment for your part in the crime.  Move on and don't do it again.

The only good thing you have done with this scenario is this post alerting the community to the person's name, so that she is never allowed to do this type of thing again.

I agree.  I definitely made a mistake, but I thought I was doing the right thing at the time.  I have learned my lesson about doing favors for others that could possibly hurt me.  I honestly just wanted to help.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had the same problem.  From the generic responses she has given to some e-mails, it seems that she may be doing this regularly.  Also, like you said, I wanted to get her name out there to warn people.
